The Auckland Womens Health Council is a voluntary
organisation of individual women and womens groups who have an interest in
womens health issues. The organisation was formed in 1988 to provide a voice for
womens health in the Auckland region and to lobby on a wide range of womens
health issues.
The Council has a special interest in patient rights,
ethics, informed consent and decision-making in health care, advocacy and the Code of
Health Consumers Rights. We are therefore committed to ongoing monitoring of the
implementation of the recommendations contained in the Cartwright Report from the Inquiry
into the treatment of cervical cancer at National Womens Hospital. Council members
organise a special event on August 5th each to commemorate the anniversary of
the release of the Cartwright Report and to remember the women who died as a result of
this "unfortunate experiment."
The AWHC provides:
Health information to individual women and
womens groups
A monthly newsletter
Researched and informed submissions on womens
health issues
Health consumer input and representatives for health
committees and working parties at both local and national level.
The AWHC holds meetings on the 3rd
Wednesday evening of every month at which we discuss current health issues. The meetings
are held on the 2nd floor, 27 Gillies Avenue, Newmarket, Auckland.
The Council offers a warm welcome to new
members so if you have ever felt that you wanted to make comments about a health issue but
did not know how to, or if you are interested in monitoring the changes that are happening
in the health arena, please contact us. We would love to have you join us.
